Example J.3: Sharing

If there are 20 cookies, and 4 people in the family, how many cookies does everyone get?

Solution

\(\mathrm{total}\) \(= 20\)

\(\mathrm{eaters}\) \(= 4\)

\(\mathrm{cookies}_{\mathrm{each}}\) = ?

You would divide the cookies equally among the eaters

\(\mathrm{cookies}_{\mathrm{each}}\) \(= \dfrac{\mathrm{total}}{\mathrm{eaters}}\)

\(\ \ \ =\dfrac{20}{4}\)

\(\ \ \ =5\)

If divided equally, everyone can eat 5 cookies
